Laboratory introduction

The State Key Laboratory of Crop Stress Biology for Arid Areas was developed from the Shaanxi Province Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology for Agriculture that was established on 28th June,2001. The laboratory entered the sequential development of the State Key Laboratory Bases supported by both the Ministry of Science and Technology and Shaanxi Province in 2005 and successfully passed the inspections in 2006. In October, 2011, the State Key Laboratory of Crop Stress Biology for Arid Areaswas approved to establish. Kang Zhensheng, a "Changjiang" Scholar Chair Professor, is the laboratory director and Prof. Shan Lun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the director of the academic committee.

The laboratory focuses on the major scientific issue - the stress resistance of crops in the arid areas of China. Starting from the unique resources of arid areas, we identify crop germplasm with stress tolerance, use modern biological technology to study the mechanisms of crop responses to abiotic stresses and the interactions of crops with diseases and pests and develop new varieties with stress tolerance, broad adaptability, high yield, and high quality. Our goal is to provide theoretical and technological support for the high efficient and sustainable development of the agricultural production in dry areas.

The laboratory takes an "open, dynamic, united, and competing management police and a "closed administration and open operation system The laboratory actively takes effective approaches to attract high level and talent national and international professionals to establish a dynamic and innovative team. The laboratory currently has 12 innovative teams carrying out research in various areas. The laboratory has established close cooperative relationships with domestic and foreign research institutions.

The laboratory have been conducting a number of projects, including the National 973 Program, the Major Projects of Developing New Genetically Modified Varieties, various projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education Innovation Team Project, and the College Discipline Program of Introducing Talents under the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, and Shaanxi Province. We have completed a number of research projects which produced innovative results including identification of stress tolerance crop germplasm, the mechanisms of crop responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, and development of stress-tolerant crop varieties. These results have made important contributions to enhance the level of crop stress biology research and promote the arid agriculture economic and social development. The results have had a great impact on the agricultural research for arid areas in the world. .

Currently, the laboratory is further integrating academic resources, gathering talents and forming various research teams, and enhancing the capacity and capability for independent, innovative research. The short-term goal of the laboratory is to complete on time the development phase for a national key laboratory. The long term goal is to develop the laboratory into an important base for educating high-level and innovative scientists and for high-quality research and development research and eventually to become a domestically first-class and internationally renowned arid crop stress biology research center with distinctive features.
